Kiondo baskets are woven by hand, with the sisal thread crossed in various patterns. Two single threads are twisted into a strong thread. Many such threads are woven together. From these threads, a sisal Kiondo is made. It takes between 2 and 4 days to finish a medium-sized basket.
Sisal is a biologically grown plant cultivated in various parts of central Kenya or the coastal province. The sisal plant resembles the aloe vera plant but is much stronger and contains more fibers, hence the sisal fiber threads. The sisal plant can grow continuously due to the harvesting model, where the plant is not completely cut down but the older layers are trimmed, leaving the younger layers to grow.
Organic sisal is used to make Kiondos. Some baskets also use cotton yarn for decoration and to enhance patterns. Cowhide is used for the handles and trimmings.
The sisal is dyed before the Kiondo is made, using non-toxic dyes that are cooked with the sisal threads and dried in the sun for one or two days.
Because Kiondos are handmade, you can say they are unique pieces. Single-colored Kiondos are the same in color and size and therefore only differ minimally from each other.
